Talking to Himself

Mar 15
2 min read

When Jesus was in the garden, He prayed to the Father that, if possible, would He take the cup from Him.

He talks here as if He didn't want to go through the crucifixion.

He didn't... but He did.

God is by no means simple. God is above and outside of time and space. His very thoughts are so far beyond human comprehension that the comparison is ridiculous.

Still, if you can grasp how much bigger God is, then accept His absolute control, you will see that everything Jesus did and said has a much deeper purpose.

On the surface, Jesus, who for a long while had been telling His disciples that He was going to get killed. He said this many times, yet the understanding of it was hidden from them.

He also said very plainly that He was in fact The Father. This was also hidden from them until after He rose from the dead.

So in that understanding, Jesus prays to Himself to take away a cup He knows quite well was the very reason He came into this world...

Did He really want to avoid the cross?

Yes, and no.

Jesus is God, yet He did in fact become an actual man. Scripture says He struggled with everything a man generally struggles with but remained sinless.

He was God, by His own nature, His own Heart, He would of course be sinless and walk perfectly. The Law is an obstacle course to prove One is God. Since He is God, of course He lived a perfect life. Yet, as a man, He also was not looking forward to the extremely painful experience He was facing.

Yet, to ask Himself to not go through it?

I find this really fascinating!

Look, He IS God. He doesn't make mistakes. He has no contradictions. These questions are purposely put there for us to look to Him for answers.

"Seek... and you WILL find."

Find what?

God

As HE IS

You cannot have faith in something you don't know if you can trust. Faith grows as you know God better, simply because He is in fact the epitome of trustworthy.

He made it all, including the concept of trust!

No, Jesus wasn't talking to Himself... even though He was.

You see, Jesus being perfectly God, offers up a situation where it is perfectly OK to get in God's face and ask for alternatives.

Of course there was no alternative, but it's OK to ask. Jesus knew this, even before He asked.

"So why do it?"

So, we could know it's OK to ask ourselves. That, and to know that regardless of the outcome, God will do what is best... and we need to be OK with that.

Faith is submission.

If you trust God, really trust God, you know He will do His best for you, even if it is a painful life.

So, yeah, He was talking to you.
